Chapter 13/ Effects | Echo/Delay
The iconic Binson Echorec echo unit only became famous when guitar player Hank B. Marvin used it on "Apache" by The Shadows in 1960. Later, Jimmy Page, Delia Derbyshire (BBC Radiophonic Workshop), The Chemical Brothers and David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) became adept users of the Binson.
"ADT" (Automatic Double Tracking) is a tape echo technique developed by Abbey Road engineer Ken Townsend in 1966. The effect can be heard on the vocals in the first verses of “Tomorrow Never Knows.” Also note the relatively modern drum sound, which in fact was a drum loop. Both sound and pattern are not that remote from what The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers would do some thirty years later!
Software manufacturer Waves has a plugin version of the effect under the name “Reel ADT:”
